Springfield’s Rich History

This community was founded in 1847 around the Orange and Alexandria Railroad’s Daingerfield Station. There was even a post office that operated as Springfield Depot from August 1866 to 1868.

The community remained a rural area up until 1948, which is when realtor Edward Carr started subdividing the area for suburban development.

Out of that, Springfield began to grow and grow.

Later, it would become a major retail destination with the opening of the Springfield Mall in the mid-1970s. Retail continued to boom in the area through the 1980s and 1990s.

Modern Day Springfield

Although Springfield Mall no longer stands today, shopping is still a major attraction for this community. In fact, the mall property was purchased and renovated to add housing and office space in the 2000s. It was reopened in 2014 as Springfield Town Center.

This community also has an excellent transportation system that gives residents easy access to regional amenities. For instance, the Springfield Interchange is a highly-traveled road that is sometimes referred to as the “Mixing Bowl” or “Melting Pot.” Other major thoroughfares in the area include I-95, I-395 and I-495.

The area’s mass transit system – what with the Virginia Railway Express commuter rail and Washington Metro’s Blue Line – also makes traveling around easy.

And this community is also conveniently close to a number of airports, including Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport as well as Washington Dulles International Airport and Baltimore-Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport.
